What’s the deal with Baltic amber teething necklaces?

So what exactly is a teething necklace and what do they do? Baltic Amber is reputed to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation and accelerate wound healing so a perfect soother for our little teethers. These claims however have met with much controversy. Some parents claim these necklaces work wonders and really do help the pain associated with teething, whilst other parents are somewhat more sceptical as to the actual pain relieving mechanism of the amber.

Baltic amber beads are not stones but fossilized tree resin, the idea is that the beads lie against the skin, warm up to body temperature and a substance contained within the amber gets released into the skin. This substance, Succinic acid occurs naturally in the body as it is a by-product of cellular metabolism, it can be found in loads of foods and medicines and funnily enough found in beer and wine as well. This substance is what is responsible for the reduction of inflammation, pain and for the general immune system boost. Some manufacturers also claim that the amber creates an electromagnetic field which stimulates the thyroid gland to reduce drooling. Unfortunately the debate rages on, still if you have a little teether who is in pain, niggly and nothing else is working, they are perhaps worth a try and as they say the proof is in the pudding! Find out for yourself!

Whatever your opinion if you do decide to purchase a necklace, make sure you buy a reputable brand, one that is actually Baltic amber – there are a lot of knock offs out there. Make sure that the string is knotted between each bead and that the child does not chew on the beads. A child under 3 years should be supervised at all times when wearing the necklace and always remove the necklace when napping and at night.
